I first wrote the song in March/April of 2009. The verses, final chorus, and guitar parts were written during this time. After a long struggle with trying to create a song months later on June 15 of the same year, this song was revisited and REVAMPED. Well...let's just say it got some shiny bells and whistles....MUCH NEEDED and MUCH LOVED shiny bells and whistles. Anyhow, additional choruses and some restructuring was put into place with the help of Tom Hinkle and Oliver Renau and after some effort...BOOM...the final piece had arrived. After some more arm pulling, singing abilities were revealed and the vocals took their shape.

The picture below is a still from an episode of The Twilight Zone called "Five Characters in Search of an Exit." I was (and still am) a Twilight Zone fanatic and used the name for my song. Although, instead of talking about donated dolls in a bin, my song is about three boys I know (and knew) and their issues. In order of the song, the first boy was in love with a girl who would never love him back, the second boy was always looking for himself while hurting others through his selfish means, and the third boy was always complaining about how his life would remain horrible, when really it was him worsening his problems. None of them (sadly enough) were bagpipe players, ballerinas, major generals, clowns, or hobos.

LYRICS:
She sees him ramble on and she hears his hopeless song
He's wandering, pondering, questioning her gaze
As she sits by the telephone, thinking of the men she's known
And he cries and he cries, thinking of her name

You'd think that he'd see that he's not free
Bound to this love he shall never receive
And she's looking at the world when he looks into her eyes
And I know a little piece inside of him dies

And he's just another character in search of a exit
Thinking that she'll love him when I know he'll regret it
Blind, yet full of love while she remains hollow
So I guess we'll just have to keep an eye on tomorrow

He's singing all these songs, not one is his own
While he searches for compliments, hunts for them please
Can someone tell this child life is strange and wild
But he's gone and he's gone and he's gone

He's chalking the world up to his dreams
While he's still at the bottom, slipping through the seams
And he goes home every night so alone and so cold
Looking for the answer, searching for his soul

And he's just another character in search of an exit
Looking for an inner truth then what he's expecting
Why should he care while he's stuck in this sorrow
So I guess we'll just have to keep an eye on tomorrow

This last boy, I knew him for just a short time
But one sip and trust me, you'd all know his wine
He was so down, he knew the ground all too well
And blamed the world for every time he fell

Yes, I tried to help him and I tried to melt him
But there was nothing in honesty this boy would believe
For every time he cried was every time he lied
And it was him that was howling 'bout his own inflicted grief

And he's just another character in search of en exit
Said his words were nothing when I knew that he meant it
Nothing's gonna change, so why do you wallow
I guess we'll just have to keep an eye on tomorrow

And it's three characters in search of an exit
So lost in their own worlds, it's hard to forget it
And I know that some will change while others won't follow
So I guess we'll just have to keep an eye on tomorrow
