The Connection: October 15, 2010

posted Oct 16, 2010 6:16 AM by Greg Orpen

Dear IACS Family,

In less than 72 hours our first group of 7th and 8th graders will be leaving for the Sargent Center.  I am thrilled to be able to join both groups on their adventures.  The Problem Solving Team will depart the morning of October 18th and return the afternoon of October 20th.  The Self Direction Team will leave the morning of October 20th and return on the afternoon of October 22nd.  Please make sure students arrive to school on time.  We will begin loading the buses at 8:10am and we will depart at exactly 8:30am.  We are on a tight schedule and cannot wait.  Thank you for your support!  Additionally, as I will be out all week I will not have access to email or be able to answer phone calls.  Please call the main office with any questions and my fellow principals will be able to help you.

Students who are not attending the Sargent trip should report to school at the regular time and they will be directed to the various teachers who will be leading them in activities for the days their teams are away.

Looking at academics we are beyond the halfway point in our first quarter.  Please remember to check your students’ progress in X2 on a weekly basis whenever possible.  We really appreciate all the parent support we receive in helping our students achieve.

In other exciting news, all of our sports teams are having fantastic seasons.  If you have not been to a game or a race I strongly recommend you come out and support our student athletes!  Also, be sure to sign your students up for basketball if they are interested.  The deadline is approaching quickly.  Speak to Mr. Lenter with any questions.

Finally, Ms. Kapeckas and I would like to report that school culture has been a point of pride for us.  We have seen a significant decrease in the number of incidents requiring our attention when compared with last year and historically.  Recent speakers have complimented our students as some of the best audiences they have worked with.  This is thanks to all your hard work, and the hard work of our students and teachers.

On that note please have a wonderful weekend and think sunny thoughts for us and our upcoming trip.

Sincerely,

Shamus Brady

7/8 Principal

The Achievement Network: The middle school at Innovation Academy Charter has joined The Achievement Network for the 2010-2011 school year.  The Achievement Network is a non-profit committed to helping all students achieve academic excellence by providing effective data-driven strategies to identify and close gaps in student learning.  Roughly every 6-8 weeks throughout the course of the school year, all middle school students will take a Math and English/Language Arts assessment designed to align with MCAS.  Data from the assessments are turned around to network schools within 48 hours and help to provide the Math and ELA teams with important data on how well we are instructing students and how well students are learning information.  Please see the middle school calendar for the dates of the Achievement Network testing.  If you have questions about The Achievement Network, please contact Erin Attfield Quinlan at eattfieldquinlan@innovationcharter.org .

The Connection-October 8th

posted Oct 8, 2010 9:11 AM by Tina Lindberg

Dear IACS Family,

It is hard to believe that we are already at the midpoint of Quarter 1! Please make it a habit to utilize our x2 online database each week to review your child’s academic progress with him/her. Viewing your child’s up-to-date grades will allow you to see when your child has missing assignments as well as assessing their current progress in each class. Families of students at risk of being on academic probation at the end of the quarter will be receiving an interim report in the mail, specifying the concern and making recommendations to guide the student to improving their performance. As you are using x2 as a tool, please do not hesitate to contact a teacher directly whenever a concern may arise.  Please consider attending one of the x2 training sessions on Tuesday, October 12th from 5:30-6:30pm or Wednesday, October 13th from 8:15-9:15am if you are new to using x2.

Enjoy the long weekend and the end of this rainy weather!

Best,

Melissa Kapeckas

5/6 Middle School Principal

Through hands-on experiences and presentations, today's youth are better able to inform the present and shape the future. NHD inspires children through exciting competitions and transforms teaching through project-based curriculum and instruction. The National History Day contest has two divisions: Junior (Grades 6-8) and Senior (Grades 9-12).  This year's theme is Debate and Diplomacy: Success, Failure and Consequences. HSSP is a perfect opportunity for students with diverse interests and a passion

for learning to explore their passions through fun and helpful classes. Our

classes are mostly taught by our very own undergraduates, all of whom have a

genuine interest in the subject they're teaching. With classes that include

"Theoretical Linear Algebra," "Hamlet: An Overview," and "Digital Art," students

will be sure to find classes that they enjoy and that will help nurture their

love of learning.

Two-hour classes begin on Saturday, October 2nd and run on seven consecutive

Saturdays until November 13th. All classes will be held on the Harvard

University campus. Online registration is now open at http://esp.mit.edu/learn/HSSP/index.html.

Lions Club International Peace Poster Contest - "Vision of Peace"

This international contest is intended to encourage children ages 11 - 13 to creatively express what peace means to them. The 2010-2011 contest theme is "Vision of Peace." The contest allows the students to share their unique image of peace so that we may all have greater tolerance and international understanding.

The Billerica Lions is proud to sponsor this contest at the Marshall Middle School, the Locke Middle School, and Billerica students at Innovation Academy. The contest is open to students who will be 11, 12, or 13 years of age on November 15, 2010.

Artwork must be no smaller than 13x20 and no larger than 20x24. Do not mat or frame artwork.

Only one entry per student per year and each entry must be the work of only one student. All artwork must be the individual students original creation. Duplications are not accepted.

All media are accepted. Note - chalk, charcoal, and pastel entries should be sealed with a fixative spray to prevent smearing. Do not laminate entries.

Three dimensional entries will not be accepted. Nothing may be glued, stapled or attached to the artwork in any way. The use of lettering or numbering on the front of the poster, in any language, is not allowed. All artist signatures or initials should be written on the back of the poster.

Artwork should be done on a flexible material so that it can be rolled for shipping in a mailing tube. Do not fold the poster.

Each entry will also require a permission form provided by the Billerica Lions Club to be completed and signed by the parent or guardian at the time of submission. The permission form is attached to this email. Please print as many copies as you will need for your students. The deadline for all entries is Friday, November 5th, to Lion Joan Parcewski, chair of the contest.

The Connection-October 1st

posted Oct 1, 2010 12:12 PM by Tina Lindberg

Dear IACS Family,

Back to School Night this Thursday was a great success.  Our Executive Director Walter Landberg introduced many of us to the 100% Club and I made my pledge on the spot!  Please consider contributing to the 100% Club.  Remember it is not the amount people are able to give but the percentage of people that give.  Please contact Walter with questions.

Our athletics teams are off to a great start this season and I encourage all students and families to do their best to attend a game.  I have had the pleasure of watching both soccer and cross country and our students are representing our school as wonderful ambassadors of sportsmanship and teamwork.

Finally, our Sargent Center Trip is fast approaching.  All forms and payments were due yesterday.  If you have not submitted forms or payment you must do so immediately.  Thank you so much for your support of this trip.  We currently have well over one hundred and thirty students who have turned in all their forms.  Please help us get to our goal of 95% participation!

I wish you all a great weekend and am hopeful that the rain will leave us alone for a little while.

Sincerely,

Shamus Brady

7/8 Middle School Principal

CLUBS:

  • The National History Day Club: National History Day makes history come alive for America's youth by engaging them in the discovery of the historic, cultural and social experiences of the past. The IACS National History Day club will meet every Thursday from 3:00 - 4:00 in room 205 starting September 23rd.  Send an email to Mr. Willoughby (joneilwilloughby@innovationcharter.org) if you would like to join.  If are interested in working on this project, but can not attend meetings on Thursdays, please contact Mr. Willoughby.
  • Writing Circle Club: Do you love to express your thoughts and feelings through writing? Do you want to be part of a community of writers? Are you looking for a safe space to write and share your stories? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you might be interested in Writing Circle! Writing Circle begins with a group writing warm up activity. During individual writing time, students respond to prompts or work on their own journals, poetry, short stories, or playwriting. At the conclusion of the circle, we share our writing from that day. Writing Circle will meet every Wednesdays starting 9/29 in room 408 from 3:00-4:00. Please contact Ms. Tarshis via email: ztarshis@innovationcharter.org if you are interested! I look forward to writing with you!

  • Yearbook Committee:We are looking for 10-12 8th graders, and a few 7th graders too, to help us create this year's yearbook!  We need students who are creative, organized, and ready to work hard!  We will be meeting once a week beginning in October.  Meeting days will be determined after the committee is selected.  Please either fill out an interest form with Ms. Tarshis or email Ms. Hinkle at khinkle@innovationcharter.org.
  • Fashion Design Club: Mrs. Lianos will be offering a Fashion Design Club for students on Tuesday afternoons from 3:15-4:15, beginning September 28th  and meeting every other week to begin. Meetings will occur in HB Rowling. Students will have an opportunity to design their own fashions/outfits, with a goal to create some of these outfits toward the end of the year.  Mrs. Lianos will be working out more of the details of this with students during our first session, and hope to see their vision for the club. Please contact Katy Lianos at klianos@innovationcharter.org

Dear IACS Families,

The IACS staff is excited to welcome you to Back to School Night this Thursday, September 30th from 6-7:30 pm. Back to School Night will provide an opportunity for you to meet your child’s teachers, see their classrooms, and hear overviews of their courses. We will assemble in the auditorium before heading to homebase classrooms to meet homebase teachers and pick up schedules for the evening. Log-in information for our x2 online database will also be distributed at this time. Using the family portal of the x2 database allows you to view your child’s attendance records and current grades. This is a wonderful communication tool for families to be able to track their child’s progress and learn of any outstanding assignments. Please make a habit of checking x2 weekly  and consider attending an x2 training session on Tuesday, October 12th from 5:30-6:30 pm or Wednesday, October 13th from 8:15 am-9:15 am if you are new to using x2.

We look forward to seeing you on Thursday.

Enjoy the beautiful weekend ahead!

Best,

Melissa Kapeckas

5/6 Middle School Principal

Dear IACS Family,

We have just completed our first full week of school after building off of two shorter weeks.

Classes are in full swing and our students have begun work on projects and taken some of their first assessments.  It is very exciting to see high levels of engagement in each and every classroom.  We are eagerly awaiting results from our first school wide assessment so we can use the data to continue to drive our instruction throughout the year.

Our community meetings are going well and we have begun to receive updates from the captains of our sports teams.  All teams are off to a great start and we look forward to amazing seasons on the soccer field and the cross country course.  I had the pleasure of attending our boys and girls soccer games yesterday and both teams played very well and seem poised for great seasons.

The 7/8 Sargent trip is barely more than a month away and our students are already getting excited.  It is essential that all forms and payments are turned in by September 30th.  Remember that financial aid is available and all families should contact Mr. Brady directly and as soon as possible.

More information about Back to School Night (9/30th) will be coming soon. Please plan to arrive promptly at 6pm because we have scheduled events that we want to make sure everyone can attend.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Shamus Brady

The Connection : Friday, September 10, 2010

posted Sep 10, 2010 11:58 AM by Tina Lindberg

Dear Families:

School is already bustling with activities as students have transitioned from orientation activities to their first classes. New students have been introduced to our four school outcomes of problem-solving, effective communication, self-direction, and community membership, which are part of their daily lives and coursework at IACS. This week, at the 5/6 community meeting, we discussed the outcome of community membership and how we could make each other feel welcome and included as we start the year. Throughout the week, I have seen students take this to heart and make connections with others by inviting new classmates to join their lunch table and introducing themselves on the patio before school.

Thank you to families for helping us ensure that our pick up and drop off procedure is safe for our students. As we all learn the system, it gets more efficient each day. Please remember that morning drop off should occur between 7:40-7:55 am. All middle school students are picked up and dropped off on the middle school side of the building. Finally, in the afternoon, please remember to turn off your car and not let it idle excessively for the health of our students per Massachusetts state law.

Enjoy the weekend!

Best,

Melissa Kapeckas

Letter from the 7/8 Principal - September 2, 2010

posted Sep 2, 2010 12:11 PM by Sasha Douglas   [ updated Sep 7, 2010 5:35 AM by Tina Lindberg ]

Dear IACS Family,

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the start of the 2010-2011 school year.  Our students and staff have spent a wonderful first three days getting to know each other and beginning to set very lofty goals and expectations for the year.  The faculty has provided students with thoughtful overviews of their classes and as I have spent time in classrooms I have been continuously impressed by the clear focus on our school outcomes and academic learning.

It is important for me to remind our community that as the year progresses it will become more and more important to check our online calendar for important and exciting upcoming events.  The calendar can be accessed through the school website.

For instance next week on Wednesday the 8th we will hold an informational meeting for all 7th and 8th grade parents about our over night fieldtrip to the Sargent Center in New Hampshire.  Please see the packet sent home with students today for further details.

Back to School Night will take place on Thursday, September 30th.  We look forward to seeing all of our families there!  This will be the first opportunity for parents to receive x2 log ins and begin accessing their students' grades.

In other news we will be holding substitute training very soon for those parents interested in working as substitutes throughout the year.  If you are interested please contact a Middle School Principal.

Also, as we are in a Charter Renewal year Walter Landberg our Executive Director will need parents who are willing to take part in focus groups that will meet with our renewal team.  Please contact Walter directly if you are interested at wlandberg@innovationcharter.org

Again, I want to say welcome to all of you and thank you all for welcoming me.  As I reflect on a lifetime of first weeks of school as a student, a teacher and an administrator, this has certainly been one of the most rewarding.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Shamus Brady

News:
An 8th grade student at IACS will be traveling to northern New England this summer to do a service project.  He will be a part of teams from all over New England going to Maine this summer to work on projects for local residents.  The work he will do includes the following:

        • Painting
        • Insulating
        • Carpentry
        • Handicap ramps
        • Roofing

In Maine, there are also migrant workers who pick blueberries. They spend 12-14 hours a day in pesticide covered fields.  The pesticides soak into their clothes and skin and cause many diseases and other health issues. In order to assist them, the student is asking for community support.    He is conducting a t-shirt and sock drive to help the migrant workers.  From now until the end of school there will be a labeled box in the lobby where you can donate new or used t-shirts of any size.  You can also donate socks of all sizes but they must be new and in the package.

Final Standings
Thanks to all who collected and submitted Box Tops this year!  Our final standings for the Home Base Baseball Contest are listed below.  I’ll be delivering a treat to the top two home bases next week.

You can continue to submit box tops until the end of the school year.  ALSO – PLEASE continue collecting over the summer.  We’ll hold a contest when school resumes  - just to keep things interesting.

FINAL STANDINGS

  • First Place – Home Base Gandhi – 824
  • Second Place – Home Base Pasteur – 539
  • Home Bases Brinker and Mandela have also made submissions totaling over $20 each

The Weekly Newsletter of IACS-MS

From the Principal

May 21, 2010

Dear IACS Families:

By next Friday, students should have completed their portfolios for the year.  While many students have met this deadline already, there are some students who have not.  Please be sure to ask you child if s/he has met the requirements and make a plan for it to be finished if s/he has not.

The High School Drama Department will be presenting The Princess Bride this evening at 7pm and twice tomorrow at 2pm and at 7pm.  The show promises to be a hit!  Tickets will be available at the door for $10.  Seating is limited so please arrive early.

Eighth grade families will be receiving a letter about the upcoming 8th grade semi-formal dance and the 8th grade moving up celebration.  Both are events to celebrate the end of middle school for our 8th grade students.  Please be sure ask your student to give this to you when he/she comes home from school today.  The letter is also attached to The Connection.

Best, Kathleen Seward
