The Connection

The Weekly Newsletter of IACS-MS

From the Principal

February 5, 2010

Dear IACS Middle School Families:

Last night we had the second of our two enrollment events for new families.  Both events were very successful, and I would like to thank all of the students and families who assisted with the sessions.

As we prepare for February Vacation, we will once again be displaying all of our lost and found items in the Commons.  Please stop in to see if some of the many unclaimed items belong to your student. Any items that are not claimed before vacation will be donated over the vacation.

In this cold weather that we have been having, it is understandable that everyone wants to get through the afternoon pick-up process as quickly as possible.  We strive to be both quick and safe in our dismissal procedures.  Please help us do this by following the directions of staff members who are directing traffic.  Also, please use the middle school side if you have middle school students.  The high school dismissal side is for high school students or for carpools that include both middle and high school students.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Kathleen Seward

Our school library is looking to grow!  We would like to enhance its middle school collection with the addition of some high-quality magazine subscriptions. Magazines are a great way to encourage all students to read outside of school. We have chosen some age-appropriate magazines such as Sports Illustrated Kids and Discovery Girls, and stored them in a wish list on Amazon.com. If you would like to donate a subscription or related supplies (magazine covers etc.), all you have to do is open the link below in your browser. It will take you directly to our magazine wish list. From there, you can make an Amazon.com purchase.  The items will automatically get delivered to the school. How easy is that?! We also have some other wish list’s set up for biographies and non-fiction titles we would like as well. You can access our other wish lists from links on the left side of the magazine wish list page.

If you have any questions, please contact Carol Gallagher (Library Volunteer) at IACSSchoolLibrary@gmail.com

Thanks for supporting our library!

WANTED: TAX PREPARER. The IACA (school community association) is looking for a professional tax preparer to work with them on tax issues. This does not require attendance at monthly meetings--just an occasional consultation and an annual tax preparation. This year's taxes have already been prepared so the first preparation would be next year. The fiscal year runs from Sept. 1 to Aug. 31. This is a great opportunity for a parent or other community member to fill their yearly volunteer hours. Contact Gwen Sandilands at gsandilands@comcast.net if you are interested.

Yearbooks

Order Your Middle School Yearbook TODAY!

Yearbooks are on sale for $30.00. Just drop off a check to Tina with “yearbook” in the memo line, homebase and the name of the student who is purchasing it.  If you need to pay cash, please make sure the cash is in an envelope with yearbook written on it and the student’s name and homebase.

IACA is a non-profit organization that exists to support the Innovation Academy Charter School:
The Community Association consists of all IACS students, their parents/guardians, and school staff and administration.  No matter how much time or what skills you have, your support is needed to help make IACS a better place for all.  Please take some time to look over the volunteer opportunities that are available by visiting the IACA Volunteer tab under the About Us section at: www.innovationcharter.org.  Don't see something that fits your schedule or skills but you have another idea of how you can help?  Contact Sheila Hingorani at michael2sheila@hotmail.com and let her know your idea or stop by our next IACA meeting on Tuesday, February 9th at 7 pm at the school.  Thank you for your support.  We look forward to seeing you!

Box TopsLet the Games BEGIN!

Our Box Tops HOME BASE for the HOLIDAYS collection drive is complete – and Homebase Ghandi was way ahead of the pack!  A special treat is coming their way soon.

HOWEVER – We understand that several large submissions did not make it into that contest.  We’re hoping to track down those entries and get the credit in for our NEW contest – BOX TOPS OLYMPICS.  Each homebase will receive a Bronze medal for 10 Box Tops; a Silver medal for 20 Box Tops or a Gold Medal for 30 Box Tops.  Look for weekly updates on where your home base stands.

ALSO – we realize that the collection box has been difficult to find at times – and sometimes goes missing all-together.  A new temporary box has been placed on the window sill in the Cafeteria and we’re working on building a “permanent” box to attach to the wall – so it should stay put!  Thanks for your understanding as we continue to work out these issues.

We collect Box Tops year round, but we have two dates a year that submissions are required to be included in our next check.  The next submission deadline is February 26th – so we really need you to clear out those drawers and get your entries in so we can convert all those little chips of cardboard into CASH!

Thanks for your support!

It's a Family Affair!

Here at Innovation Academy, we know grandparents (or aunts and uncles, and other extended family members for that matter) are very interested in the lives of their grandchildren and we'd love to help keep them informed!  Please provide us with the names and addresses of family members and friends and we'll send them our newsletter and include them on our mailing list for future newsletters.  You can send this contact information directly to Walter Landberg, Executive Director via email (wlandberg@innovationcharter.org) or regular mail at 72 Tyng Road, Tyngsborough, MA 01879.  Or, if you want to give him a call, his number is 978-649-0432, ext. 2217.  Whatever way works best for you!  Thanks for helping us to share the great work of Innovation Academy!

High School Service Culture Committee:
We are reaching out to our community of parents for an upcoming Service Day on February 25, 2010. We would love all suggestions and/or support to help us make this day a success. What we need:
•    A keynote speaker –someone who is involved in non-profit service based work.
•    At least 6-10 places where groups of our high school students can volunteer and therefore also establish long-term relationships for further service opportunities in the Greater Lowell area.
•    Parent chaperones
•    A panel of people who have done long-term service projects. Ideally, we would love the panel to be a combination of teaching staff and parents
If you are interested in helping us make this day a success, please contact Ryan Ferdinand (
rferdinand@innovationcharter.org), Oliver Renau (orenau@innovationcharter.org) or Emily Porter (eporter@innovationcharter.org). Thank you!

Recycle for $$ for IACS!

Ways to recycle:Ink/Toner Cartridges, Cell Phones/Laptops and Paper:

Dear IACS Parents & Students:

Recycle Ink & Toner Cartridges

The IACS Green Team has teamed with Cartridge World, Bedford, MA to turn your recycled ink and toner cartridges into cash for our school! There will be Cartridge World recycle bins at the Middle School and High School entrances. Please place your ink/toner cartridges (any size) in these bins.

Does your workplace have a recycling program?? If not, ask them to donate their used ink/toner cartridges to the program….we would love to get local businesses involved!

Recycle Cell Phones & Laptops

You can also recycle used cell phones and laptops. You can put your used cell phones in the green recycle bins in the Middle School and High School entrances.

If you have a laptop you would like to recycle, you can drop it off with Tina at the middle school front office.

Recycling Paper

Send in your used newspapers & used paper (no cardboard or phonebooks please) and place them in the huge yellow and green Abitibi Paper Recycling Dumpster located in the back corner of the High School parking lot.

Remember, everything you recycle….cartridges, cell phones, lap-tops or paper, means dollars for our school!  For more information or if you need assistance in getting your recycling to the school, email Annie Accettullo, candystp@yahoo.com or Kellie Burtch, kburtch@innovationcharter.org
